Up 25% in a Month and Down 27% in a Year: The Arithmetic of a Partial Recovery

Chart showing bitcoin's 25% monthly gain against its 27% twelve-month loss and the distance to its record high

The bitcoin recovery has delivered roughly 25% in thirty days inside a twelve-month loss of about 27%, which means almost the entire annual decline happened before August.

On this page

Bitcoin is up roughly 25% over thirty days and down about 27% over twelve months. Ether is up 32.2% and down 41.2% on the same two measures.

Those pairs of numbers, held together, describe the market more precisely than any single one of them.

What the two figures imply

If an asset is down 27% over a year and up 25% over the last month, then the position twelve months ago maps to roughly 0.73 times today's price, and the position five weeks ago maps to today divided by 1.25.

Run that and the pre-August level sits at about 0.58 times the year-ago level — a decline of roughly 42% before the recovery began.

In other words, almost the entire twelve-month drawdown happened before August. The last five weeks have clawed back a meaningful part of it and nothing more.

The distance still to travel

BitcoinEther
Price~$78,894~$2,495
30 days+25%+32.2%
12 months-27.1%-41.2%
Record$126,198.07 (6 Oct 2025)$4,953.73 (24 Aug 2025)
Below record~37%~50%
Gain needed to recover~60%~99%

That last row is the one people misread most often. An asset down 37% needs to rise 60% to get back, not 37%. Ether, down 50%, needs to roughly double.

The asymmetry is arithmetic, not sentiment, and it is why drawdowns take longer to repair than they take to create.

What a partial recovery usually looks like

Recoveries from declines of this size are rarely smooth and rarely fast. They typically involve several sharp advances separated by retracements of a third to a half of each move.

The past fortnight fits that description exactly. Bitcoin ran to an intraweek high of $82,281 on 3 September, closed the week at $77,024, and now trades near $78,894. That is an 8% range traded twice in both directions, resolving to the middle.

The 50-week moving average sits at approximately $80,300 — above current price, and the level every rally has run into.

Why the recovery happened at all

Not because anything changed about the assets.

US spot bitcoin ETFs took in roughly $3.5 billion in August, their strongest month since October 2025, followed by three consecutive positive weeks and a combined $1.2 billion across bitcoin and ether funds in the week to 4 September. Corporate treasuries added: Strategy bought 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million after a ten-week pause, and BitMine added 28,086 ETH to reach 5.93 million.

Against that, CME FedWatch odds of a September rate hike have passed 60%, Chairman Kevin Warsh has said he would be "hard pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive" with PCE at 3.7%, and the 30-year Treasury yield reached a cycle high of 5.26%.

A 25% monthly gain achieved into that macro backdrop is genuinely notable. It is also the reason the gain has stalled.

The number that would change the read

A recovery becomes a trend when it survives a retracement.

So far the August advance has been tested twice — by the Iran escalation that took Brent above $98 and bitcoin to $76,229 on 2 September, and by the August jobs report that pushed hike odds from 50% back above 60%. It held both times, giving back a fraction each time.

The third test is August CPI, arriving before the Federal Reserve's 16 September decision. Economists have described it as capable of swinging the committee between a hike and a hold.

How to read the pair of numbers

Three rules that hold up better than any single figure.

Always quote the drawdown alongside the gain. A 25% month means something very different at a record high than 37% below one.

Convert the drawdown to the recovery required. Down 37% needs 60%. Down 50% needs 100%. The second number is what matters for a holder.

Check what the monthly figure is measuring from. A large monthly gain measured from a local low tells you about the low, not about the trend.

What to watch

Whether $80,300 gets reclaimed on a weekly close. The first genuine technical improvement in a month.

August CPI. The third and largest test of the recovery.

Whether ETF flows persist through it. Three positive weeks is a run; four through a contested data week would be a pattern.

The twelve-month figure over the coming weeks. As the worst months roll out of the trailing window, the annual number improves without price doing anything — the same mechanic currently draining the sentiment index.

The mechanic that will improve the annual figure

Something worth anticipating: the twelve-month number is going to look considerably better within weeks, and not because of anything the market does.

Trailing performance measures compare today against a date twelve months ago. As the worst months of the drawdown roll out of that window, the annual figure improves mechanically while price stands still.

Bitcoin's record was set on 6 October 2025. Once that peak passes out of the trailing twelve-month window in early October, the year-over-year comparison stops measuring from near the top.

Expect a wave of coverage noting that bitcoin's annual loss has narrowed sharply. It will be arithmetically true and analytically empty, and it is the same effect currently draining the sentiment index from the other direction.

Frequently asked questions

Is bitcoin up or down?

Both, depending on the window. Bitcoin is up roughly 25% over thirty days and down about 27.1% over twelve months. Ether is up 32.2% and down 41.2% on the same measures. Almost the entire annual decline happened before the past five weeks.

How far is bitcoin from its record?

About 37% below the $126,198.07 record set on 6 October 2025, which requires roughly a 60% gain to recover. Ether sits about 50% below its own high and would need to roughly double.

What has driven the recovery?

Flows instead of fundamentals. US spot bitcoin ETFs took roughly $3.5 billion in August followed by three consecutive positive weeks, while Strategy bought 4,603 BTC and BitMine added 28,086 ETH — all against rate-hike odds above 60%.

Why will the annual figure improve without price moving?

Because trailing measures compare against a date twelve months prior. Once bitcoin's October 2025 peak rolls out of the trailing window in early October, the year-over-year comparison stops measuring from near the top — arithmetically true and analytically empty.
